Short Circuit Study

The purpose of a short circuit analysis is to determine the fault current levels at any point in the electrical distribution system. Sources of fault current are the utility, site co-generation, and running motors.

The highest fault current occurs with maximum utility / co-generation contribution corresponding with all motors running. The minimum fault current occurs with minimum utility contribution, co-generation off, and all motors off….such as after strong storms have removed power and factories have been shut down. Fault current levels must be known in order to properly purchase and protect electrical equipment of use at a given facility and to perform effective coordination studies.

Proper short circuit ratings are required by the National Electrical Code and they are paramount for Employee Safety and reliable operation of electrical equipment.
